No-No Boy Rehearsal Update 3-8-10

Supporting characters are hard work. The first feeling is of disjointedness, fragmentation, and isolation. Then you start seeing the path, the story, the over all picture. What has helped me tremendously is watching the other actors work. Watching them and getting to know their characters, my family, and as a result, myself. I can see clearly now who they are, and who I am. Through this observation and discovery, now everything means something different. Ken has crafted a play that challenges in the best of ways and Alberto's vision and deft hand brings this to life. Watching and working, I know that this will be a play that will affect the audience deeply. Time to go further with it.

No-No Boy Rehearsal Update 3-5-10

I'm currently in rehearsal for Ken Narasaki's "No-No Boy" a theatrical adaptation of John Okada's novel. The cast is great and I have to be on my game. For me the role of Taro is challenging. A smaller (but very important) role inherently has the challenge of fragmentation. Important to remember that every character has a full life that existed before and will exist after what the audience will see. It's a great part (in my opinion) and am excited to be working on it, even though I feel I haven't found all of 'Taro' yet. I will. Exploring the dynamics of the era is also, extremely eye-opening. It was truly a different world back then, fraught with it's own specific challenges. Rehearsal time.

EXT. LINDA MAR BEACH - DUSK
Jared and Nix sit on the sand just above the waterline. Clad in 4/3 wetsuits, they leash their body boards to their ankles. Heavy clouds hide the sun and the wind starts to pick up.

Nix:
I dunno, what do you think?

Jared takes a look around. They are the only ones on the beach with nobody in the water.

Jared:
Where is everyone?

Nix (laughing):
Yeah, I know dude. Fuck it. Let's go.

Jared:
Let's do it.

Nix and Jared take off sprinting into the white wash. Nix dives in first skimming for a few feet on his board and then submerging himself in the cold water. He surfaces.

Nix:
OH FUCK!! IT'S COLD!!

Jared follows suit and dives into the white wash.

Jared:
OH SHIT!!!

The guys do their best to catch waves amidst the choppy closed out conditions.

Nix, pulls a drop knee while a wave closes out on him.

The wind picks up while there is a lull between sets. The guys float just beyond the break.

Suddenly the wind stops and birds begin to circle.

The guys look at each other.

Nix:
What the hell is that?

A seal pops it's head up 20 feet from them.

Jared:
Oh shit! Fuck...it's just a seal. Fuck! Fucker!

Nix laughs and suddenly stops.

Nix:
Fuck man, I guess we should bounce cause where there are seals there are -

Jared:
Sharks.

The guys pause for a moment. Then paddle as fast as they can for the shore.

Exiting the water the guys laugh.

Jared:
Fucking seals.

Dusty and out of breath Jared and Rajiv finally reach a sloped clearing overlooking Los Angeles.
The guys pause for a moment to catch their breath while taking in the view. Jared powers the camera up, fiddles with the settings and hands it to Rajiv.

Rajiv:
This works. OK, sit down there. Move a little to the left.

Rajiv moves back as the frames Jared through the viewfinder.

Jared moves to his mark and sets.

Fire ants crawl into Jared's Jeans. He is sitting on their humble home.

Rajiv:
Dude, this looks great man!

Jared:
Oh, yeah. What does -

Suddenly, Jared springs up and bats his legs with his hands wildly.

Jared:
What the FUCK!!

Jared pulls his pant leg up to reveal FIRE ANTS biting his friggin leg.

Jared:
Fucking ANTS!!!

Rajiv crosses over to Jared and helps bat the BIG FRICKIN ANTS from his clothing.

With the ants removed, Jared moves up the hill and away from their humble abode.

Jared:
Lemme see.

Rajiv passes the camera to Jared for playback.

Jared peers into the camera's flip out LCD screen.

Jared:
Damn! That looks great!!

Rajiv and Jared bump fists.

Jared and Rock climb down an open grate off the sidewalk.

INT. STORM DRAIN - DAY
The beams of the boy's flashlights cut through the darkness of the winding cement tunnels.

Jared:
What was that?

Rock:
Huh?

Jared:
You hear that?

Rock:
Nah.

Jared:
k.

The boys forge through the tunnels stopping intermittently to decipher graffiti.

The boys sit, unzip their backpacks and unwrap Musibi's and Haw Flakes.

Jared lights a firecracker while Rock plugs his ears.

Rock sets up empty soda cans in a pyramid.

Jared takes aim at the cans with his bb gun.

Cans stutter and fall as they are hit with bb's.

The boys forge further into the underground maze of tunnel's.

Rock stops suddenly.

Rock:
I got an idea.

Jared:
For what?

Rock:
First one to turn on their flashlight loses.

Immediately, the boys turn off their flashlights and in the darkness take off sprinting.

The sound of sneakers hitting the cement and labored breathing.

A light can be seen at the end of the tunnel.

EXT. STORM DRAIN EXIT - DAY
The boys burst out of the tunnel onto a cement platform at the edge of Kipapa Gulch.

The boys stand out of breath looking over the lush valley.

Rock:
That was fun.

Jared:
Yeah. Last one back loses.

Jared takes off sprinting back into the tunnel.

Ross:

FFWD Montage to -

INT. LIVING ROOM - DAY
Jared, Ross, Kekoa, Raynard, and Mary sit in silence as they stare at the Televison. Minutes go by and no one says a word. The Far Side Calendar on the table reads: September 11th 2001.

Insert Epic Musical Score.

Fade to:

INT. KITCHEN - DAY
Kekoa heats up a tortilla on the stove. Jared fills a pot up with water and places it on the stove.

Jared:
Burritos?

Kekoa:
Yup, yup. What? Saimin again?

Jared:
Ho, yup.

The guys burst out laughing.

Fade to:

INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
Ross sets up a paper bull's eye target against the living room wall. Directly above it is a window. Ross pumps his bb gun and distances himself from the target.

Jared:
Dude, I dunno man. Not a good idea man. What if you miss?

Ross:
Ah, man I ain't gonna miss.

Ross takes aim and fires. He looks up from the sights of the bb gun.

Ross:
Where did it hit?

Close up on the window with a dime sized hole in it. Shattered.

Jared:
Fuck.

Dissolve to:

MONTAGE

- Ross and Jared are dueling via Street Fighter 2 Alpha.

- Jared, Kekoa, Ross, and Raynard sit around passing a plastic bottle of vodka between them

- The guys all passed out.

- Jared, Ross, and Ray all give Kekoa "bro hugs" as he leaves with a final box.

- Jared and Ross, give Ray "bro hugs" as he leaves with a final box.

- Mary and Ross, give Jared hugs as he leaves with his final box.

Sometimes I imagine myself driving to work. As I arrive to find a prime parking spot located a stones throw from the office, a strange thing happens. Instead of the feeling of excitement coming over me, I find an older more familiar kind of feeling. I drive right past the spot, past the block, past the freeway exit and past the city itself. I impulsively embark on a journey, a vacation if you will, that has no timetable. As I stop to refill my busted ass Civic at an Arco in the middle of nowhere I set my cellphone on top of the gas pump and drive off. I grow a beard. I drive on the road without expectations, without hesitations. I greet strangers with a smile and a handshake eager to listen to their stories, each one adding to my own. There is no internet, email...instead of facebook, there is only face to face. That feeling is what I miss most about Hawaii. I miss that so much.

I am really excited as we will no doubt have one-on-one meetings with creative executives from many different companies. This will be a great experience, in fact I don't even know if it has sunk in yet...

EOS 650

I just picked up an old EOS 650 from Ebay for under $30 bucks. I was itching to shoot some rolls of film ever since I got rid of my old Pentax ME Super. I was surprised that the price of 35mm SLR's have dropped so much. I mean back in the day the EOS 650 was top dog. It is a truly revolutionary camera in the annals of 35mm photography. And you know what the best part is? I can interchange my Canon lenses between my Rebel XT and EOS 650. I just couldn't say no when I saw it. Also, there is something ultimately satisfying when you hear the 650's shutter fire and motor wind. Pure bliss.

Lazy Saturday Project - Ring Flash

Alright, I love the ring flash but it's like over a thousand dollars for a good one. After reading and perusing all the strobists out there I decided to make my own ring flash project and see what I could drum up. I went to the dollar store and got two bowls some aluminum foil and three hours later I had a new toy. An old low guide Vivitar flash I had lying around became the source of light behind this experiment. All in all it turned out pretty well, although it's hot on one side as expected. Useable. Not pretty but useable.

Damn. Say it isn't so. Mr. Ledger was one of the most promising young actors in a long time. I loved seeing his work, which was deep and finely crafted. I was looking forward to decades of seeing him act. Well... what can you do? Give the man some applause.

I'll be honest. I had no intention of seeing this movie even though I was quite aware of the extensive viral marketing from early 07. Fast forward to November 07 and while in San Francisco for my friends wedding, I learned that one of my good friends was lead Rotoscope for the film at Tippet Studios. While he did not divulge any info on the "Monster", I wanted to see his name in those credits and cheer.

Well, I went on opening night to the Mann in Glendale. aThe place was packed. The film started and ended and I cheered for Ross in the credits.

Cloverfield blew away any expectations I had for the film. It was awesome. The digital camera POV was effective. Like the stories characters, you know nothing about the overall story. What you do see is their story and nothing more. Some people didn't like that, but I thought it kept you right there with them. At no point in the movie do you really know more than them other that that what is happening is after the attack. There are no explanations. Even at the end. The camera movement was no problem for me in fact it served to heighten the experience. I don't know how many times I wished the camera could just move to see more of the overall scene, but you are locked in to this mad dash and panic. Kinda made me feel the same way. Cloverfield was a whole lotta fun!

Thao Nguyen's album will be coming out at the end of the month via Kill Rock Stars. At first it bothered me that she sounds a little like Cat Power. But the more listened, the more I heard Thao's own voice. Shit, her album is going to kick ass. Buy it.

Blade Runner Final Cut

I just watched Blade Runner the final cut version. Man...this is one movie I don't ever get tired of watching. Also, the 'Deckard is a Replicant' argument is squashed once and for all....he most certainly is...well...it is most certainly implied that he is. In this version it seems to me that while it appears that Deckard is becoming sympathetic towards the replicants, this is just the setup for the ending where he makes the decision to move forward in his relationship with Rachael as he realizes he is one himself (the very end of the movie).

The real sympathizer is Gaff (Edward James Olmos) who tips Deckard off that he is a replicant and suggesting that it's okay to love Rachael (the ending of the rooftop scene after Roy Batty expires as Gaff is returning to his "car"). The more I watch it the more I realize that Gaff plays a huge role in the film even though we don't see him much.

Also, the more I watch it the more it seems that the replicant 'test' doesn't really exist. In fact it would make sense to have the Blade Runners to be replicants. Why risk real human life to track down rouge replicants when you can simply have replicants efficiently hunt rouges down? The trick is that you wouldn't want to have the blade runners know that they are replicants as they would eventually develop emotions of their own and come to a moral crossroads that would interfere with their duty...which is exactly what happens at the end as he knows that Rachael is a rouge status replicant.

First day of shooting is done and....damn....it was a marathon. It was an overnight shoot at a coffee shop in Manhattan. We were there from 7pm to 6am the next morning. It was great, we got some great footage and they served coffee all night long. In the end though everyone was burnt as the caffeine had become ineffective. Got a couple of days off before we resume so I'll update then. Here's a picture from the set:

Just got in to NYC for New York Lately. It's not as cold as I thought it would be, but I'm sure once the wind kicks in I'll be missing the west coast weather. Shooting my first scenes tomorrow so I'll update with some camera phone pictures from the set later...stay tuned.

I have been cast in Gary King's new film 'NY Lately'. I will play the role of Jared (how convenient!), a human resources director who finds unexpected romance amid the back drop of New York City. I have worked with Gary before on the 2005 short 'Hubris' so I'm really excited to be involved in this project. I'll be in New York reading with actors auditioning for parts not already cast. Day 3 has been by far the most "action oriented" day thus far. It's so much fun! Towards the end of the night it was quite sad knowing that it was the last day of shooting (for a while at least). Good peeps, major talent, and hard work all equated one heck of an experience. Good times. Good times indeed.

2012 - Day 2

Well, the second day of shooting is done (for me at least). The new location rocks! It's an empty jewelry factory that has been gutted out...creepy. Once again everyone involved has been stellar and despite a few delays (which I don't mind as I get to hang out with good peeps while I wait) everything went smoothly. The third and final day of shooting awaits...

2012 - Day 1

Well, I just finished the first day of shooting for the web-series "2012". Wow. Let me just say that the production on this project is seriously talented....seriously. It was so much fun, the script and story are exciting and the people involved in the project are talented and great to be around. Seriously, I am so thankful to be involved in this project. Pro sound, HVX + Brevis w/Nikons. They shot prime lenses the entire day. What's even more impressive is that the shoot went without a hitch. I play the character of Nathan, the lead characters best friend. Hopefully in a couple of months the project will be out there for you to see. Can't wait for tomorrow.

Gonna be shooting a webisode called '2012'. It's a thriller type story with a planned network roll out (crosses fingers). I can't really say anymore than it'll be good times the first week of November. If anything, good times will be had.

Radiohead just announced the release of their new album "In Rainbows". What is truly unique, is that they are releasing it digitally first (DRM Free!) and users pay what they think the album is worth. There is also a box set with extra tracks, artwork, and vinyl available as well as a physical cd sometime in 2008. They are releasing this completely independently. Genius. Have a listen:

THE THUMPING CLAW
MAKE SOME NOISE. LEAVE YOUR MARK

The Thumping Claw is a series of events with the purpose to "promote and assign artistic voices towards community awareness." Inspired and foundationally modeled after ART 168's "Big Sister" company Desert Lotus Entertainment who produced this year's All-Asian cast of the Vagina Monologues at the Japan American Theater, The Thumping Claw will donate portions of the proceeds from all their events to a single charity. This summer, the Center for the Pacific Asian Family will be the recipient. Other events include outdoor and venue performances of The Outlet, a minority-based comedy improv troupe directed by November Morris (July 2007), and The Thumping Claw One Act Series which features seasoned Asian American directors and playwrights with emerging new artists.
